Road Trip 2013, Day 1

We just got back from our 9 day Road Trip. To say it was a lot of work with 3 young kids is an understatement, but we had a ton of fun and actually are already looking forward to taking our next trip!! We took a lot of video clips along the way, which I don't plan on uploading, but I am so excited to have those videos and these pictures to look back on of all the fun (and craziness!) we had!!

Day 1, Driving to Memphis
On the first day after we woke up and had breakfast, we loaded up the van and set off for the 6 1/2 hour drive to Memphis, Tennessee. 20 minutes into the trip Brooke was alrerady complaining and asking when we would be there and saying that it was taking forever. For lunch, we really wanted to stop at a place like Denny's or IHOP. We got off at 3 different exits that supposedly had these restaurants but we ended up just wasting a ton of time (in BORING Arkansas) and had to settle for McDonalds instead.

Everyone is happy and ready to go!

All loaded up in the van....

Texarkana... The border of Texas and Arkansas is made up of Texarkana, Texas and Texarkana, Arkansas (hence, Texarkana)

At our first hotel of the trip in downtown Memphis
After we settled into the hotel, we headed out to see Beale Street. We were there on a Sunday, so there wasn't too much going on, but it was still hopping! There was lots of fun music playing, but wow, there definitely is a different kind of folk to be found there.

For dinner we ate at Dyer's Burgers, This restaurant, which first opened in 1912, is known for its great burgers and its ageless cooking grease.

After dinner, we walked around a bit and then decided to take a carriage ride for a little tour of the city.

A little blurry, but thats okay.

Lastly, we drove by The National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel. In the days of legal segregation, the Lorraine Motel was one of the few motels open to black guests. Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated at the Lorraine as he stood on the balcony outside room 306, on the motel's second floor.

Room 306 is marked with a wreath.
